Stick

It’s the metaphorical opposite of the carrot. It’s the tack of the scare tactic. It’s the threat of a negative consequence for doing (or not doing) something. However, sticking only with the stick approach to influencing behavior has only limited effects — ya know, it’s not sticky enough. So … stick that in your pipe!
